You do not need a special kit or a perfectly planned afternoon. A simple prompt gives everyone a place to start; let the child change the rules or take the play in a new direction.
Pick an activity by the time you have
| Time | Try this | Make it fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | Copycat sounds or faces | Take turns leading; the child can pass or change the sound. |
| 5 minutes | Find three things that share a color | Play seated, indoors, or outside. Use objects the child can safely reach. |
| 10 minutes | Make a tiny museum of a few favorite things | Choose large, safe objects and let the child be the guide. |
| 20+ minutes | Invent a pretend shop, animal rescue, or story walk | Use whatever is already nearby; switch roles when attention shifts. |
Ideas for common everyday moments
“I’m bored” at home
Invite the child to choose between two easy starts: build a blanket-free fort from cushions, or make up a story about an ordinary object. A small choice can get things moving without turning play into a long adult-led project.
A rainy day or a day indoors
Try a sound hunt, a silly opposite-rules game, or a pretend restaurant using play food or drawings. For more, see our guide to indoor activities for kids.
After school or before dinner
Keep the first step short: name five things you can see on a walk, dance to one song, or give the child a small helper role in setting the table. A two-minute start is still a real activity.
Several children with different ages
Choose one shared theme and let each child participate at their level: older kids can invent clues while younger kids search, or everyone can add a sound or character to one story. The upcoming Moments app is planned to let you select more than one age when children will play together.

Make the idea easier to start
- Offer two choices instead of asking an open-ended “What do you want to do?”
- Use familiar, age-appropriate things you already have.
- Keep the activity flexible. It is fine if the child changes it or stops.
- For active play, clear the space and supervise in a way that fits the child and activity.
Want a ready-made prompt? The upcoming Moments app is planned to include 1,200 activity ideas. When available, you will be able to choose one or more ages (under 1 through 16), inside or outside, and 2, 5, 10, or 20+ minutes. Cards are planned to include simple steps and supplies when needed, with offline use and no ads, accounts, analytics, or tracking.
