A yard, sidewalk, or nearby park is enough

Easy outdoor activities for kids to make outside time fun.

Outdoor play can be a nature walk, a movement break, or simply noticing what is around you. Use the space available, make the activity fit the child, and keep the plan flexible.

You do not need a destination or a long list of supplies. A familiar route or small outdoor space can become a place to search, imagine, move, and talk together.

Outdoor activity ideas for kids

On a short walk: sound detective

Pause and listen for three different sounds. Guess what made each sound, then take turns making a quiet sound of your own.

In a yard: shadow shapes

Notice a shadow on the ground. Change position and see what changes. For children who prefer not to move much, point out shapes together.

At a park: choose-your-own path

Take turns choosing which safe path or landmark to visit next. Stay together and follow park boundaries and posted rules.

For a quick movement break: move like…

Take turns choosing a comfortable animal-inspired walk, stretch, or arm movement. Adapt for the child’s balance and mobility.

Active play and children’s health

The CDC says children ages 3–5 should be physically active throughout the day and that caregivers can encourage children to be active while they play. For ages 6–17, CDC guidance recommends 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily, including aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. These are broad public-health guidelines; individual needs, disabilities, weather, and medical advice matter.

Read the CDC’s Child Activity: An Overview for the full recommendations. The upcoming Moments app is planned to help caregivers find an outdoor idea, but it will not be an exercise prescription or a substitute for individualized health advice.

Make outside time work for the day

  • Choose shade, water breaks, and clothing for local weather and conditions.
  • Stay close to children near streets, parking areas, water, or uneven ground.
  • Make movement optional and adjust it for the child’s comfort, energy, and ability.
  • Bring the activity to a porch, courtyard, or doorway if a longer outing is not practical.
Keep children within active supervision and follow local safety guidance. Outdoor hazards vary by place, weather, age, and activity.

Need an indoor backup?

Save an indoor idea for a change in weather. When it launches, Moments is planned to let you switch between Inside and Outside, filter for one or more ages, and choose 2, 5, 10, or 20+ minutes. Browse indoor activities for kids or more things to do with kids.

Choose an outside idea for the time you have.
